I'm preparing for another trip to NY to do some more filming with Daniel. We're also going to North Carolina, where he spent his earlier and more chaotic teenage years. It's also where his first son was born, when Daniel was only 15.
Whilst I've been struggling to find funding for this film (and it's thanks to my forever supportive parents that the film has made it this far), the last few weeks are looking more hopeful, nothing concrete yet, but fingers crossed.
And I've started chatting to a DJ in New York, DJ Bazooka Joe aka Truck Jewls, who may be doing the soundtrack for the film, which I'm really excited about. I'm hoping to meet up with him when I go to NY at the end of the month.

A bit of background on my current documentary ZONED IN. The film started in 1998. My friend Bo was teaching in a high school in the South Bronx and we thought it would be interesting to start making a film about public education in the US. Problem was that the school wasn't really up for any kind of media presence (for fear of negative representation) so we just filmed with a few of Bo's students. One of them was Daniel, very mature and opinionated at the tender age of 16. I wasn't living in NY, and the project wasn't funded, so I went over to NY as often as I could to continue filming with Daniel. Neither of us knew where the filming would take us and what we might do with all the footage accumulated but we were both committed to continuing the process. So after 8 and a half years, I'm in the very privileged position of having a third of an extraordinary young man's life on video. Given that Daniel is now back in the South Bronx teaching high school, and we've come full circle, it feels like the right moment to turn the footage into a film. This doesn't mean I'm going to stop filming though, as long as Daniel is up for it, I may just continue so we can do a sequel...March 2nd 2007
